Why did Virginia Tech change their name? ›

Significant academic changes in 1896 ushered in a new name more befitting the university's higher profile — Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute, commonly known as Virginia Polytechnic Institute, or VPI.

Virginia Tech owns two Cessna Citation jets (aircrafts) used to provide these services; a Citation Excel and a Citation Sovereign. Both jets are affectionately referred to as HokieBirds. The Citation Excel seats a maximum of eight passengers while the Citation Sovereign seats a maximum of nine.

We have three libraries on the Virginia Tech campus: our main location, Newman Library, and two branches, the Art & Architecture Library and the Veterinary Medicine Library.

Housing at Virginia Tech offers more than just a place to sleep: It's an on-campus experience enriched by initiatives, inclusion, and engagement. The 47 on-campus residence halls are home to about 9,300 students and are kept safe, clean, and well-maintained by Virginia Tech's Housing and Residence Life.

Virginia Tech's main campus in Blacksburg has 2,600 acres, 213 buildings, an airport, Lane Stadium, Cassell Coliseum, the Moss Arts Center, and an adjacent research park. As the university meets the global demands of the future, the Blacksburg campus is constantly adapting to fulfill learning and research needs.

The founding name was Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. Following a reorganization of the college in the 1890s, the state legislature changed the name to Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute, effective March 5, 1896.

The Commonwealth dissolved the affiliation between the two colleges in 1964. The state legislature sanctioned university status for VPI and bestowed upon it the present legal name, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, effective June 26, 1970.

Virginia Tech began using “Enter Sandman” during the 2000 season at Lane Stadium, though it initially wasn't a fully pre-planned entrance. That season, the Hokies went 11-1, including a 6-0 mark at Lane Stadium. The next season, Virginia Tech began using it in a more official capacity.

The Virginia-Virginia Tech football game scheduled for Saturday has been canceled in the wake of a shooting earlier this month that left three Cavaliers players dead, the ACC announced Monday night. In a statement, the league said, "The ACC and Virginia Tech continue to support UVA following the devastating tragedy."
